(this is not a definitive list, I have more things I need, that I will post about. Once I have confirmed I have everything I need, I will post a sticky page with the full list and where I got them from.)

I set about finding the parts I would need for my DIY arduinome monome clone port.

Heavily led by the excellent post over at bricktable.

As mentioned in the comments from the above post.

Digikey does not have the ED90053-ND in stock currently. However there is a RoHS non-compliant version in stock.

digikey # ED3124-ND

Both are IC SOCKET 24PIN MS TIN/TIN .300

I also went for this alternative.

Digikey

Quantity Part Number Description Unit Price Total
2 MAX7219CNG+ IC DRIVER LED DISPLAY 8DGT 24DIP 10.81 $21.62

2 MM74HC165N IC REGIST PAR-IN/SER-OUT 16-DIP 0.54 $1.08
2 ED90050-ND IC SOCKET 16PIN MS TIN/TIN .300 1.02 $2.04
2 ED90049-ND IC SOCKET 14PIN MS TIN/TIN .300 0.89 $1.78
6 P4910-ND .10UF 100V 10% MONOLITH CERM CAP 0.48 $2.88

2 S1012E-36-ND CONN HEADER .100 SINGL STR 36POS 1.25 $2.50
8 P828-ND 10UF 50V MINI ALUM ELECT (KA) 0.16 $1.28
5 ED3124-ND IC SOCKET 24PIN MS TIN/TIN .300 1.44 $7.20
128 511-1611-ND LED 3MM 468NM BLUE TRANSPARENT 0.3364 $43.06
5000 RHM24.3HTR-ND RES 24.3 OHM 1/10W 1% 0603 SMD 0.0045 $22.50

** update, I have no idea why I ordered 5,000 tape mounted resistors. I know I need at least 1, and I think I’m missing diodes, but I need to try and find which ones I need. Be aware if you brought what’s on my list, you can return the resistors so long as you don’t open them and fiddle around with them, just like I did :)

* note, thanks to wilcox for pointing out that the max led display driver can be got for free as a sample from the manufacturer.

Sparkfun

Quantity Description Unit Price Total
2 Arduino USB Board $34.95 $69.90
8 Button Pad 4×4 – Breakout PCB $9.95 $79.60
8 Button Pad 4×4 – LED Compatible $9.95 $79.60

4pcb

You need to ask for order number #4pcb_Owen.

For 4 boards + 1 free one there is a deal of $33 each on a 5 day turn plus shipping and handling.
So the total cost would be $132 + shipping and handling ($15 if you go Ground).

I’ve been told, that the best person to speak to is Ryan. Ryan Schlecht – Sales Associate, Advanced Circuits. 800-979-4722 ext. 1304, ryan@4pcb.com He was able to redirect me to my local sales assisant.

As far as I can tell that’s my complete shopping list for the hardware (not including the USB cable – which I have hundreds of spares and the enclosure.)

I have ordered double quantities of everything for two reasons, I’m paranoid and an assuming that something will go tragically wrong with the first attempt, if everything works I’d love to have a spare to give as a gift or have at work.

  1. But why only 2 4×4 button pads from sparkfun?

You want to build a light version?

  2. ok, having a look at the pice you payed i figured out you bought 8 of each :)

well, like my order in, except i’m going to build a 128 :)

  3. Yeah it was two sets of 4, kinda confusing I guess, I’ll edit that.

I thought about building a 128. But I’m not sure for a first pass I need one, maybe I can attempt that next year in the winter.

One option I was thinking was a 64 but laid out as 16×4 rather than 8×8. So you’d have 16 across, I always thought that looked more logical for a 16 bar music layout. But I haven’t seen any details of what would need to change to get that to work, so first up I want to go safe and simple.

Still have to make the digikey order. hopefully I should be getting all my stuff next week and am anxious to get started. as far as the digikey # ED3124-ND part goes are you sure it will still function the same? I am a noob to electronics for the most part..
    Hit me back!

  5. So you are building a 128 then?

  6. Nah, I’m aiming for 1 64 to start, then have the parts for another 64 if a: something goes wrong, or just later on.

    I’d really like to eventually have a 8×8 and a 4×16.

  7. Wilcox, no idea about the ED3124, I’m probably as noob as you. I’m going for full trust of the comment on the bricktable thread.

  9. Hi there ! Starting an arduinome build, I wanted to thank you for this precise list. As you mention in the header, this list has to be completed. I saw you added 64 Diode Signal from here : http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8588

Should there be anything more ?

  11. Hey Owen, I totally will do. But it’ll be a week or two. I want to get through an 8×8 successfully first, then start looking at an approach for the 4×16. Do you have any info online for the approach?

  12. Hey. Thanks in advance. Anyone placing an order for shields?

    Comment by Mitya — September 19, 2008 @ 10:07 pm
  13. Can’t find the shields, also the Breakout PCB is out of stock.
anyone knows where to order from instead of sparkfun?

    Thanx

    Comment by Yage — September 24, 2008 @ 8:37 pm
  14. Yage you have to order the shields from 4pcb. If you’re in the US, just call them up and ask for #4pcb_Owen. I think if you wanted they do you just a single shield, you’ll get hammered on shipping. Or swing over to monome.org and see if anyone wants to go “in” on a group buy.

If you’re overseas, you need to get the eagle files and find a local (nice and friendly, treats their employees super well) pcb maker, and see if they can make it for you.
